Pharmacological and Clinical Notes
Thyme possesses antitussive, expectorant, and bronchospasmolytic properties. Its expectorant effect is related to the stimulation of ciliary movement by terpenes, as well as the production of softer mucus with lower viscosity, leading to the expulsion of thick mucus and facilitating its removal. The bronchospasmolytic property of thyme is attributed to its flavonoid, phenolic, and essential oil constituents. In a randomized, double-blind clinical trial, 60 patients with severe cough were treated for 5 days with thyme syrup (10 mL three times daily), and the results obtained were then compared with those of the control group who had received bromhexine. The results in both groups demonstrated similar antitussive and expectorant effects, confirming the efficacy of thyme syrup in reducing cough and facilitating mucus clearance. In addition, thyme, due to the presence of thymol and carvacrol, possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties. In this syrup, natural thickener from Althaea (marshmallow) has been utilized, which, owing to its mucilage content, exhibits soothing effects on the mucous membranes and relieves cough.
